This renowned expressing from Forest Gump, comes to life in a single region, Switzerland, well known for their chocolate and cheese with holes in it. I guess the cheese is pretested by mice and licensed yummy!
Soon after departing Kenya on the African leg of my world steam tour, Malcolm (Arnie) Holdsworth and I hopped on a airplane for Zurich. There we would rendezvous with three of our other mates, Robert (Rags) Kingsford Smith, John (Bazza) Allerton and Jim (Night time) Carter for a 3 thirty day period tour of Europe in a Commer Campervan.
Two of our crew chat with some curious onlookers outside our Mobile Residence. Surely not a Winnebago!
We arrived at Zurich Airport, passed by means of customs and achieved our comrades who had driven non quit from Winchester in the Uk. I was handed the keys and questioned to travel us as a result of the night towards Lucerne, a lovely town on a lake.
Up until finally this level, I had driven in Australia, New Zealand, and components of Africa, in all of which you have correct hand push cars driving on the still left hand aspect of the highway. All of a sudden in this article I am with a suitable hand travel car or truck driving on the suitable hand side of the road.
I managed to get very clear of Zurich and we headed for a border crossing as we experienced to move by way of West Germany. At the border I pulled up future to the guard residence and whoops! I strike it with the remaining hand mirror. I was rather terrified, and they were extremely amused, it gave them a good giggle.
Our initial dawn in Europe was spectacular. Lucerne was picture postcard fantastic with the lake hunting like glass. Onward to Brienz, and the popular rack railway that however operates with steam locos.
At Brienz, we parked the car and took the coach up the hill. It is a spectacular place that reminded me of the “Sound Of Music”. At the top rated of the hill, we distribute out for the shot and then headed to the café. It was lunch time and we had been receiving hungry.
Switzerland was incredibly costly, especially for food items. We were being all on a restricted finances, and ate a lot of foods in the campervan mainly because of this. In any case though ready for our food items, we seen some candies and bread sticks on the desk. Being hungry Aussies, and being aware of that at home something placed on the desk is free food, we dug in. When the invoice arrived, there was a cost of about $5 per chocolate (at least $25 in today’s funds), so we remaining with empty wallets. A lesson learnt.
Aside from that it was a good working day for our initially outing in Europe.
In this article is a online video taken in 2018 of the journey up the mountain.
